Silence in The Age of Noise

Writer's picture: Ana ReadAna Read

As in nature, there are phases in life when everything seems to marinade in a waking sleep. It's not necessarily good or bad; simply, days pass, one after another, in a different cadence. Winter still lingers, and the instinct for withdrawal prevails.

This is the ideal time to reassess the dynamics that connect us with the world, with others, and with ourselves. This is where the superpower of silence comes in. Its envelopment and tranquility are the effective fuel that allows us to weave reality, find peace, and recharge.

Slowing down may seem counterproductive to the hustle and bustle of everyday life; socially, we are highly conditioned not to stop. The feeling of speed, characteristic of modern times, is ingrained in us, and slowing down causes anxiety.

But this is an art to practice, and over time, its benefits will reveal themselves, and the process will become easier.

njoying moments of silence in nature is one of the most effective practices to ensure that pause moments become more creative and rejuvenating. The textures, aromas, and sounds of nature are the multisensory paradise that helps us activate a change in perspective on life's challenges and constraints.

It would be great if we could all incorporate frequent trips to nature into our busy schedules, away from the hustle and bustle of urban centers. We know it's not realistic. So how do we incorporate small moments of silence into our daily lives?

5 strategies to activate the superpower of silence daily

  1. Exposure to sunlight. Morning is the ideal time to incorporate a moment of silence and contemplation before we are available to the world and technology. Catching some rays of light in the morning sends an important signal to our bodies to regulate internal biological rhythms. Instead of starting the day in a rush and jumping to our phone screens, it makes all the difference to spend a few minutes in silence in a quiet place, outdoors or even by a window. We activate our minds to start the day more focused and productive.

  2. A rejuvenating break. We already know that scheduling intentional breaks throughout the day makes a difference in managing our energy levels. Planning to take these breaks in a place where some natural elements predominate can make a difference. A place with natural plants, or with a view of the sky, or a visit to the tree down the street.

  3. Take a walk. Walking has an impact on our state of mind; the body exercises, and automatically the mind calms down. Whenever possible, prioritize walking over the usual transportation. This can prove to be an excellent strategy to gain some minutes of silence and daily introspection.

  4. Have a hot drink. Enjoying a few moments just for ourselves to enjoy a hot drink can work as a mechanism to activate our senses. Consciously perceive the warmth, aroma, and texture of a cup of our favorite beverage.

  5. Embrace nothingness. Here is perhaps the most difficult way to slow down. Try for a few minutes to remain seated or lying down without doing absolutely anything. Not meditating, not consciously thinking about breathing, not planning, not remembering, nothing. Just contemplate, preferably outdoors. But if not possible, find a pleasant spot by a window or in a place with natural elements like stones, wood, or plants.

These are just a few tips, among many others that may work better or not depending on personal preferences and contexts. The important thing is to be aware that incorporating even just one of these strategies, or another equally effective one, can be a very simple way to start a transformation in our daily habits, towards a quieter and healthier life.
